Justice Served: Court of Appeal Upholds Conviction of Former Imo Commissioner
The Court of Appeal in Owerri, Imo State, has affirmed the conviction and three-year prison sentence of Prince Laseberry Okafor Anyanwu, a former Commissioner for Transport under the Rochas Okorocha administration. Anyanwu was found guilty of fraudulently diverting N180 million belonging to the Imo State government.
According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Anyanwu, while serving as Chairman of the Committee on the Review of Imo Transport Company, illegally transferred N100 million and N80 million from the company’s account into the bank account of Oma Oil and Industries Limited, a company in which he was a shareholder, director, and signatory.
The EFCC investigation revealed that Anyanwu abused his office to confer a corrupt advantage upon himself, violating the trust and responsibility entrusted to him as a public official. The court’s decision to uphold his conviction and sentence serves as a deterrent to others who may be tempted to engage in similar corrupt practices.
The Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold Anyanwu’s conviction and sentence is a significant step towards ensuring accountability and transparency in governance. It demonstrates the commitment of the judiciary to uphold the rule of law and hold public officials accountable for their actions.
