Trump Sets New Deadline for Russia to End Ukraine War
US President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum to Russia, giving President Vladimir Putin 10 to 12 days to make progress toward ending the war in Ukraine. This new deadline, announced on July 28, significantly shortens the original 50-day timeline Trump set on July 14.
Trump expressed frustration with Putin’s refusal to de-escalate the conflict, stating, “I’m going to make a new deadline of about ten or twelve days from today. There’s no reason in waiting.” If Putin fails to move toward a ceasefire, the US will impose penalties, including sanctions and secondary tariffs on countries doing business with Russia.
The consequences of inaction would be severe, with Trump warning that “too many people are dying” in the war. He emphasized that Putin “has got to make a deal,” and the US will take action if progress isn’t made. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has praised Trump’s statement, calling it “particularly significant” in trying to move forward to a peace settlement .
Ukraine has urged Western countries to take a tougher line with Putin, and Zelenskyy has emphasized the importance of sanctions in ending the war. “Russia pays attention to sanctions, pays attention to such losses,” he said. Meanwhile, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev criticized Trump’s ultimatum, saying it could lead to a war involving the US.
The situation remains tense, with Russia continuing its bombardment of Ukrainian cities. The US and its allies are watching closely to see if Putin will meet Trump’s deadline. Trump’s determination to end the war is clear, but the path forward remains uncertain.
