EFCC Investigates 18 Sitting Governors for Financial Infractions
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently investigating 18 sitting governors in Nigeria for alleged financial infractions. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede revealed this during a public awareness program in Lagos, aimed at addressing the misuse and abuse of the naira.
According to Olukoyede, the EFCC doesn’t wait until governors complete their tenure before initiating investigations. The agency will proceed with its investigations and take necessary actions once the governors vacate their positions due to constitutional limitations.
Olukoyede shared a related anecdote about a former Nigerian governor who fled the country after leaving office to evade EFCC arrest. The ex-governor hosted a lavish birthday party in a UK hotel, where he allegedly sprayed British pounds in denominations of £10 and £50. The hotel staff, concerned by the unusual behavior, contacted emergency services, fearing the guest might be mentally unstable.
The EFCC’s ongoing investigations into financial infractions by sitting governors demonstrate the agency’s commitment to combating corruption. As the investigations unfold, it remains to be seen how the EFCC will proceed with its cases against the governors.
