ADC Denies Coup Allegations, Reaffirms Commitment to Democratic Process

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly rejected allegations that it is plotting to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu. In a statement released on Thursday, ADC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the claims as “baseless and false narratives” aimed at clamping down on opposition leaders and activities under the guise of national security .

The allegations were made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who claimed that the opposition was planning to overthrow the President Bola Tinubu government before 2027. However, the ADC has rubbished these claims, insisting that its mission is to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) democratically .

Abdullahi emphasized that the ADC is committed to the democratic process, saying, “We are not soldiers, we are politicians. We don’t have bullets; we only have the ballots.” He added that when the time comes, the ADC will present its solutions and alternative vision of the future to the Nigerian people and leave them to make their choice .The ADC has expressed concerns that the APC’s allegations are a ploy to silence opposition voices and intimidate dissenting views. Abdullahi wondered why the APC, now in power, finds it strange that there is an opposition at all, highlighting the importance of opposition in a democratic setup .

The ADC’s denial of coup allegations underscores its commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law. As the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to opposition voices and whether the ADC’s concerns will be addressed .
