AAC Stands with ASUU: When Workers Can’t Eat, Nation Doesn’t Deserve Peace

The African Action Congress (AAC) has thrown its weight behind the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in its growing threat to embark on industrial action over the non-payment of June salaries. The AAC condemned the Bola Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) government for its “anti-worker, anti-education posture,” accusing it of neglecting educators while enriching politicians and their allies.

The AAC emphasized that the refusal to pay lecturers on time is not merely a matter of administrative failure, but a form of “class war” against those who uphold the nation’s intellectual foundation. The party questioned the priorities of the government, asking:

What kind of government starves the very people tasked with building the intellectual future of the nation
How can a state that cannot pay lecturers on time claim to be reforming education or driving national development?

The AAC warned that when workers can’t eat, the nation doesn’t deserve peace. The party’s statement highlights the growing discontent among workers and the potential consequences of neglecting their welfare.

The AAC’s support for ASUU underscores the need for the government to prioritize the welfare of workers, particularly those in the education sector. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the growing demands of ASUU and other worker unions. One thing is certain, however: the fate of Nigeria’s education system and the future of its intellectual foundation hang in the balance.
