Northern Ministers Rally Behind President Tinubu Amid Growing Criticism

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has come under intense scrutiny from opposition figures and political elites, prompting Northern ministers in his cabinet to defend his government. The ministers have been given “marching orders” by the Presidency to counter criticisms and challenge dissenting voices ¹.

Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle has been at the forefront of this effort, condemning former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi for making “reckless and inflammatory” comments against Tinubu. Matawalle also dismissed the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) as a “political burden to northerners,” accusing the group of pursuing selfish interests.

Other ministers, including Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, have also joined the fray, responding to criticisms from governors and other political figures. Tuggar described Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed’s remarks as “mischievous” and urged him to avoid misleading the public on national matters.

The Presidency’s directive to Northern ministers to defend Tinubu’s administration has sparked a heated debate, with some politicians accusing the government of trying to silence critics. However, the ministers argue that they are simply standing up for the government’s policies and programs.

The controversy has also highlighted deepening divisions within the ruling party, with some politicians from the North-West and North-East zones vying for influence and power. As the 2027 presidential election approaches, the battle for control of the party is likely to intensify.

In the midst of this political turmoil, one thing is clear: President Tinubu’s administration will face intense scrutiny and criticism in the coming months. Whether the Northern ministers’ defense of the government will be enough to stem the tide of criticism remains to be seen.
