Governor Adeleke’s Merciful Decision: A New Lease on Life for 53 Inmates

In a heartwarming display of mercy and compassion, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has pardoned 53 inmates, including Segun Olowookere, who was initially sentenced to death for armed robbery. This decision comes after the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy recommended the pardoning of these inmates.

Olowookere’s case gained widespread attention on social media, with many believing he was sentenced to death for stealing a fowl. However, the Osun State Judiciary clarified that he and his accomplice, Sunday Morakinyo, were convicted of armed robbery, including robbing a poultry in 2010.

Governor Adeleke’s decision to pardon these inmates is a testament to his commitment to justice, mercy, and human rights. The governor exercised his powers under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (As Amended), to grant pardon to the inmates.

*Breakdown of the Pardons:*
– *30 inmates*: Had their sentences remitted and forgiven in whole.
– *12 inmates*: Received outright pardon for simple offenses.
– *6 convicts*: Had their death sentences commuted, with four receiving outright pardon and one having their sentence reduced to 15 years imprisonment.

This merciful decision by Governor Adeleke offers a new lease on life for these inmates, allowing them to reintegrate into society and start anew. As Peter Obi commended Governor Adeleke for intervening in Olowookere’s case, this decision showcases the governor’s dedication to upholding justice and human rights
