Potential Food Crisis Looms for 33 Million Nigerians in 2025
According to a recent report from the Cadre Harmonisé released on November 1, 2024, an alarming forecast suggests that 33.1 million individuals across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria may encounter a severe food and nutrition crisis from June to August 2025.
This analysis was conducted by a collaboration of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation, the World Food Programme, and Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, among other partners.
The states likely to be impacted include Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Taraba, Katsina, Jigawa, Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, Kaduna, Kebbi, Niger, and Benue, along with Cross River, Enugu, Edo, Abia, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kwara, Ogun, Lagos, Rivers, and the FCT. Notably, the report highlights that within this group, approximately 514,474 are Internally Displaced Persons, primarily from Borno, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
Currently, around 25 million people in these regions are already facing food insecurity. This dire situation calls for urgent attention and action to avert a potential crisis in the coming years.
