7-year Ban on New Picking up Higher Learning Schools Set By Federal Government

7-year Ban on New Picking up Higher Learning Schools Set By Federal Government

There will be no new federal polytechnics, colleges of education, or universities for seven years, something which the Federal Government has now confirmed. Their aim with this decision is trying to fix the problem of declining quality of education in the tertiary education system of the country, as well as addressing the issues of over-stretched resources and under-staffed institutions .

Key Reasons Behind the Ban

Inefficient Duplication:There is an overabundance of such institutions, with many operating below capacity. As an example, there are federal universities with less than 2000 students.

Poor Infrastructure: The lack of facilities and resources is one of the biggest reasons for the decline in the quality of education in such institutions.

Inadequate Staffing:Institutions with more staff than students is a quite common problem, the most stark example being a northern university with 1200 staff and 800 students.

Dwindling Enrolment: A stark lack of applicants is common with students, last year 199 universities had fewer than 100 applicants to JAMB and 34 had zero applicants .

Now, the government is hoping to focus on the following:

Improving the old infrastructure to modern standards.

Improving the teaching quality by bringing in new and trained professionals.
